PAST MISSIONS

At the time of Hurricane Katrina, we adopted a UCC Church in New Orleans and sent gift cards redeemable at Home Depot to help the congregation rebuild their city. Two of our members then traveled to the church and spent a year in New Orleans aiding their cause. Our pastor, Rev. Dr. Priscilla L. Denham, visited and worked there for a week.

Today we embrace several major missions. Loaves and Fishes is our local mission. We hold family movies each month. The admission price is a donation to this charity. We also donate needed items monthly.

One charity that we support is relief for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Through UMCOR, United Methodist Committee for Relief, we are donating Health Kits and money.

The Federated Church will then match with dollars the price of the kits donated. This money will go 100% to Haiti with no office costs deducted.

Health Kits for Haiti:

The kits contents are: 1 hand towel (15" x 25" up to 17' x 27'; 1 washcloth; 1 comb (large and sturdy); 1 nail file or fingernail clippers; 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. up); 1 toothbrush in original package; and 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages. These products are packed in a 1 gallon plastic bag.

These kits must be accompanied by $1 each for the purchase of toothpaste.

57 kits have been given by church members and friends.

The Federated Church of Ayer to Lead Crane Project for Japan

There is an ancient Japanese legend that says that 1000 paper cranes will bring good luck.

The Federated Church of Ayer has begun to make 1000 paper cranes and along with monetary donations will be sending them to the people of Japan who have suffered in the recent earthquake and tsunami. The church invites all who would like to be a part of this project to stop at the church and learn to make an origami paper crane. The church’s front doors will be open on Wednesdays from 9 to 12 until our goal is reached and you are invited to join us for this amazing craft. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to help with the project.

Interim Pastor Hannelore Nalesnik learned this craft from a Japanese exchange student when she was in high school. She now would like to teach many in the community to make these cranes to send to Japan to raise the spirits of the people there.

Pastor Hannelore said, “These are not difficult to make because there are many folds that are the same. Origami is an amazing craft and can be done by those from about 10 to 100. We would love to see other organizations and churches in the community join us in this project. It is our hope that we will also collect enough monetary donations to help with the rebuilding of homes and lives from the devastation.”

The money and cranes will be sent to a United Methodist charity which will forward it to the United Church of Christ in Japan. All funds will go directly to the rebuilding.

The church, which donates to many mission projects, also held a dinner with proceeds donated to the people of Chile after their earthquake and also sent first aid kits and money to Haiti.

Please watch for additional activities to help bring this project to a successful conclusion.
